We currently have a 2019 13" MacBook Pro and a 2020 Dell XPS 13. I've owned Elitebooks in the past, TBH fine, but not great.
With those you're getting similar build quality, battery life and importantly for you the screen (look for higher resolution ~4k and colour quality/gamut - you'll need to see the reviews on more technical websites for that). Yes they're expensive, but they're not much different in price to equivalent devices from the likes of Dell (Precision/XPS) and Lenovo (Higher end Elitebooks). If you want a portable workstation then you need a different machine. If you want a desktop replacement that's fine. Those gaming laptops may be very powerful, but are usually heavy, have poor battery life, and lower resolution (and colour) screens with a build quality designed for sitting on a desk. Price is more a function of construction, weight, screen quality and battery life. You need to decide whether you want one that sits on the desk and is connected to a screen and power permanently, or one that is used independently.īasic specs like CPU, RAM and graphics have little to do with laptop prices. Macbooks are definitely more portable, that's their main advantage, but I would question the built quality for professional use on the go. That's if you are planning to do it professionally and need the best possible equipment. And for the GPU, ideally, you'd want the new 3080 GPU or. Ideally, you'd want something like AMD 3990X 64-core CPU or perhaps AMD Ryzen 9 3950X 16-Core cheaper version. It would also benefit from a multi-core CPU as well. I believe Davinci uses GPU so it will benefit from a high end GPU. Look into what you are using and then you can maybe go for a less costly version of the same laptop ( eg, 1650 or 1660ti). Not all video programs can utilize the GPU. You are looking at about 7lb for the laptop plus a big charger. Here's an example of a very powerful laptop that can be used for playing any latest games as well as for editing. I would strongly suggest going for the desktop version unless you need a laptop.
Just like having the right keyboard, mouse,etc It saves a lot of time over the course of a day. Multiple monitors also help a lot in multitasking.

If you intend to do editing full time, you need a proper monitor and something like 34" would be in the ideal range. All of those are just some of the questions that can change the answer drastically.Įditing on a tiny screen is a nightmare so I would not recommend even the 15", if laptop is your choice of a system. What program are you using or intend to use? What's your experience, and so forth. I am surprised at your open ended question. What will be the pros of paying double for lesser power if you go with Apple MacBook though?
